Tereglio is a small hamlet in the commune of Correglia Antelminelli. It is situated in the hills above Lucca and is perched along the top of a steep ridge with two streams on either side that feed into the river Serchio below. A narrow street winds through the many houses that make up the village and it has two long retired fortresses close to the main access points that use to guard the village. The foundations of the first fortress are still visible today, but no readily visible evidence of the second one remains. However, as the second fortress was known to be near the church there is evidence to suggest that our place, Casa Querce, was built on the remains of this fortress sometime in the 10th century. The evidence for this is found in the lower cellar where there is an arrow slit once used by archers to defend Tereglio.

Tereglio is well known in the region for its church, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (13th century). It houses several art pieces; the Cross on Wood - Berlinghiero Berlinghieri; the Angel of the Annunciation - Piero D'Angelo (14th century); the Madonna and Child Enthroned (13th century); and Santa Rosalia and Child - Pietro Paolini. Tereglio is bordered by the Oasis and Nature Reserve of Botri, where you can visit the ''Orrido" and view golden eagles and other rare animal and botanical species.

Tereglio has one restaurant in town: Bar Elena (10 meters from Casa Querce) and one nearby, Bar Michele, which is about a 1.5km walk just outside of Tereglio. Both are excellent and offer traditional Italian cuisine with locally grown and caught items. There is also a market located in the town which is a short walk from Casa Querce as you make your way to the parking lot.

One of the things we love about this town, aside from the wonderful people, serenity and extraordinary views, is the unique and ancient doors that are found throughout the hamlet (image to the left). This one is past the church, up the stairs and around the corner from Casa Querce.

A few kilometers from Tereglio are a number of small towns and villages. Fornoli (the closest) has a laundromat and a grocery store for essentials. Just to the northeast of Fornoli is the town of Bagni Di Lucca which is well known for its thermal baths. Please check the "Things To Do" tab for a complete list of local sites.
